Memories

My memories of Grade 5 with June Christie are vivid. It
seems like yesterday that we were preparing for Open Day
– topics like ‘Cruising in the Caribbean’, ‘The Banana’, ‘The
Coconut’. What team spirit existed! How we enjoyed working
to the wee hours of the morning to set up our displays.
So much fun and laughter. I cannot believe that vibrant,
fun filled spirit could ever be silenced. No June! You live
in each and every one of us who loved you so dearly. You
were SOLID - a food FRIEND.

Ms. Christie was my fifth grade teacher. When my parents
moved to Jamaica I was a shy, "gifted" and sensitive child
in a place where no one seemed to understand what I was
going through... That was until I met Miss Christie at Mona
Preparatory School .
Ms. Christie took me under her wings immediately and was
always supportive and encouraging. She was a gifted
teacher and an innovative one. I credit my love for reading
to her. I remember how she encouraged us to read, read
anything, just read. She also encouraged me to think for
myself and to be proud of my abilities. She was so patient
and kind, I never felt foolish at any time... I can still remember
those burst of laughter, that gentle smile that made you
feel you were always important. I miss her a lot and just
want to say what a profound impact she had on me. As a
teacher today, I try to be the kind of teacher she was.

My favourite and best teacher, Miss Christie
You had a heart that deeply cares,
You added a lot of love
To everything you shared,
A valuable gift
That could not be bought,
And even though
You'll never know how much, you helped
To change the world
Through every life you touched.
You sparked the creativity
In the students whom you taught,
I never knew I had a special gift for learning
Until you came into my life.
You helped me strive for goals,
for academic excellence.
You are such a special teacher
That no words can truly explain and tell
How much you're valued
For the work you did so well.

Aunty June, my godmother, teacher, mentor, guide and so
much more. I will always remember the tremendous role
she played in my personal development and she will
always hold a special place in my heart.
A remarkable lady who led a great life, a teacher par excellence
and the caring soul in a godmother who would
always put a smile on my face are but few of the descriptions
which capture the fabulous personage in her. Ineffable
it is, the way I'll miss her.

                        Teachers come and go
But every so often one comes along
That you’ll always remember
One who makes learning an adventure…
And who can still remember
What it’s like to be young
And growing up…
The kind who can make you
Want to be the very best you can be…
Someone you can really talk to,
Who really cares
What happens to you…
That person is YOU...
My dear friend and mentor, June Christie!
